Gaussian blur convolves the image matrix with a two-dimensional normal distribution bell curve. The weight $G(x, y)$ of each surrounding pixel is calculated using:
G(x, y) = [1 / (2πσ²)] · e^(-(x² + y²) / 2σ²)
Where $\sigma$ represents the blur radius standard deviation. High-frequency transitions (sharp borders, text, and facial features) are smoothly diffused into adjacent pixels without ringing artifacts.
Unlike optical blurring which mathematically attenuates frequency bands, pixelation aggregates an entire $N \times N$ cell of pixels and averages their color values:
C_block = (1 / N²) ∑_{i=0}^{N-1} ∑_{j=0}^{N-1} Pixel(x+i, y+j)
By replacing dozens of distinct pixel values with one uniform tint, all structural micro-information is permanently erased. Even modern de-blurring AI models cannot mathematically reconstruct original cryptographic numbers or license plate characters once block sizes exceed 12px.
A critical security risk in many web tools is using CSS filters like filter: blur(10px) for redaction. CSS blur is merely a cosmetic layer; inspecting the DOM or saving the underlying source file reveals the un-blurred original.
