In traditional analog photography darkrooms, a contact sheet (also called a proof sheet) was made by placing strips of 35mm or 120 film negatives directly against photographic emulsion paper under an enlarger light. This 1:1 exposure allowed legendary photojournalists and portrait masters—from Henri Cartier-Bresson to Richard Avedon—to rapidly inspect focus, framing, exposure brackets, and expressions across an entire roll of 36 exposures without printing individual enlargements. Modern digital contact sheets carry on this heritage by giving art directors, clients, and photographers an organized, bird's-eye view of a shoot.
Standard computer displays render at 72 to 144 DPI (dots per inch), but commercial offset presses and fine-art inkjet photo printers require 300 DPI to render micro-typography, camera metadata, and miniature photo details without pixelation or halftone artifacts. For example, an A4 sheet at 300 DPI requires 2480 × 3508 pixels (approx 8.7 megapixels), while a US Letter sheet requires 2550 × 3300 pixels.
