Discover the definitive astronomical, mathematical, and jurisprudential guide to calculating Isha prayer times, Red Twilight (Shafaq al-Ahmar), White Twilight (Shafaq al-Abyad), true Islamic Midnight (Nisf al-Layl), and the blessed Last Third of the night (Thuluth al-Layl) for Tahajjud. Learn why civil 12:00 AM midnight is irrelevant to Islamic prayer, how solar depression angles between 12° and 20° are derived using spherical trigonometry, and how high-latitude regions resolve persistent summer twilight using classical Fiqh rules (One-Seventh, Angle-Based, and Night Middle methods). Includes authoritative comparisons of Umm al-Qura, MWL, ISNA, and Karachi calculation standards.

📚 The Science of Red Twilight (Shafaq) & Islamic Jurisprudence

1. Shafaq al-Ahmar (Red) vs. Shafaq al-Abyad (White)
Majority of Jurists (Māliki, Shāfi‘ī, Hanbalī, and Abū Yūsuf & Muhammad al-Shaybānī of the Hanafī school): Isha time begins upon the total disappearance of Shafaq al-Ahmar (the red afterglow in the western horizon), which astronomically occurs when the sun depresses to roughly 12° to 15° below the horizon.

Traditional Imām Abū Hanīfah view: Isha begins when Shafaq al-Abyad (the lingering white twilight) disappears completely, requiring a solar depression angle of 17.5° to 18°.
2. Calculating Islamic Midnight (Nisf al-Layl)
Islamic Midnight is NOT equivalent to civil midnight (12:00 AM). In Sharī‘ah, the night begins strictly at Sunset (Maghrib) and ends at True Dawn (Fajr). Islamic Midnight is the exact midpoint:

T_midnight = T_maghrib + (T_fajr - T_maghrib) / 2

According to sound hadiths in Sahih Muslim, offering the Isha prayer before this midpoint is the preferred window (Waqt al-Ikhtiyar).
3. The Astronomical Last Third of the Night (Thuluth al-Layl)
The Last Third of the night is the most blessed time for Tahajjud prayer and supplication, where Allah Descends to the lowest heaven in a manner befitting His Majesty.

It is calculated by partitioning the total night span into three equal segments:

T_last_third = T_maghrib + 2 * (T_fajr - T_maghrib) / 3
4. High-Latitude Adjustments & Client-Side Privacy
In locations above 48° North or South (e.g. the UK, Scandinavia, and Canada during summer), twilight may never fully disappear, causing standard astronomical formulas to fail. Our engine provides the One-Seventh (1/7th), Angle-Based, and Night Middle rules recognized by international Fiqh councils.
