Allah says in the Holy Qur'an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36): "Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred." The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clarified in Sahih al-Bukhari (3197) that these four sacred months are: Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, al-Muharram, and Rajab. In these months, warfare is strictly prohibited and sins as well as good deeds carry greater spiritual magnitude.
When the Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah in 622 CE, he found the Jewish community observing a fast on the 10th of Muharram. When inquired, they explained that this was the day Allah miraculously parted the Red Sea, saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel, and drowned Pharaoh and his army. In gratitude to Allah, Prophet Musa fasted this day. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ affirmed: "We are closer to Musa than you," and he fasted on that day and instructed the believers to do likewise (Sahih al-Bukhari 2004).
Towards the end of his blessed life, the companions noted to the Prophet ﷺ that the 10th was revered by other communities. To maintain distinct Muslim religious identity and celebrate Prophet Musa's victory with pure monotheistic devotion, the Prophet ﷺ said: "If I live until next year, I will definitely fast the ninth (in addition to the tenth)" (Sahih Muslim 1134). Hence, the Sunnah is to combine the 9th with the 10th. If the 9th is missed, scholars (including Imam Ahmad and Ibn al-Qayyim) recommend fasting the 10th and 11th.
The Prophet ﷺ said that fasting Ashura expiates the sins of the preceding year (Sahih Muslim 1162). Major Islamic scholars (such as Imam an-Nawawi) explain that this expiation applies specifically to minor sins (الصغائر). Major sins (الكبائر) require sincere personal repentance (Tawbah), cessation of the wrongdoing, remorse, and restitution of any infringed human rights.
