Ole Rømer (°Rø)1701 • Copenhagen
Danish astronomer Ole Christensen Rømer devised one of the very first calibrated temperature scales. He set 0°Rø as the freezing point of brine, 7.5°Rø as the freezing point of pure water, and 60°Rø as the boiling point of water. Fahrenheit visited Rømer in 1708 and adapted his scale.
Isaac Newton (°N)1701 • London
Sir Isaac Newton formulated a scale using linseed oil. He defined 0°N as the melting point of snow/ice and 33°N as the heat of boiling water. Each Newton degree corresponds to approximately 3.03 Celsius degrees.
René Réaumur (°Ré)1730 • Paris
René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur designed an 80-degree scale based on the thermal expansion of diluted alcohol (expanding by 80 parts per 1,000 between freezing and boiling water). Widely used across 18th-19th century Europe.
Joseph-Nicolas Delisle (°De)1732 • St. Petersburg
French astronomer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle created a unique inverted scale where 0°De was water boiling and 150°De was water freezing. Colder temperatures have larger numbers! Used in Imperial Russia for over a century.

Metrology Standard: The Kelvin is the base SI unit of thermodynamic temperature defined by fixing the numerical value of the Boltzmann constant k to be exactly 1.380649 × 10⁻²³ J/K (BIPM 2019 redefinition). The Celsius scale is defined internationally by t/°C = T/K - 273.15.

📚 Thermodynamic Metrology, Absolute Zero & Scale Physics
Absolute zero (0 K = -273.15 °C = -459.67 °F = 0 °R) is the theoretical fundamental lower limit of thermodynamic temperature. At absolute zero, all classical translational kinetic motion of molecules ceases, and a system possesses only its quantum mechanical zero-point energy. Under the Third Law of Thermodynamics, it is impossible for any physical process to cool a physical thermodynamic system to absolute zero in a finite number of steps. Negative absolute temperatures exist only in specialized inverted quantum population systems (e.g., laser physics) and do not represent sub-absolute-zero cold.
The Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales intersect at exactly -40 degrees (-40 °C = -40 °F). We can prove this mathematically by setting the two scale variables equal to a common variable x:
x = (9/5)x + 32 x - (9/5)x = 32 -(4/5)x = 32 x = 32 × (-5/4) = -40
Thus, -40 is the unique single real-number equilibrium point between both systems.
Both the Kelvin (K) and Rankine (°R) scales are absolute thermodynamic temperature scales that place their zero point (0) at physical absolute zero. The difference lies purely in the size of the degree unit:
Kelvin uses the same degree increment size as Celsius: Δ1 K = Δ1 °C.
Rankine uses the same degree increment size as Fahrenheit: Δ1 °R = Δ1 °F.
Consequently, T_R = T_K × 1.8. Rankine is widely used in thermodynamic engineering and combustion physics within countries using Imperial units.
In 1732, French astronomer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle created a mercury thermometer calibrated so that 0 °De was defined as the boiling point of pure water, and 150 °De was defined as the freezing point. Because of this calibration, the Delisle scale runs backwards compared to modern intuitive scales: cold temperatures have high positive numbers, while temperatures above boiling have negative numbers! The scale was adopted by the Russian Academy of Sciences and used throughout the Russian Empire for over a century.
