📖 Islamic Naming Guidelines & Sunnah Practices

Essential Islamic jurisprudence, recommended naming practices, and prophetic traditions for newborn children.

Giving a child a beautiful name with righteous spiritual meaning is one of the primary duties of Muslim parents. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized that names carry spiritual influence over a person's character and destiny.
"On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names." — (Sunan Abi Dawood)
Islamic scholars categorize recommended names in order of preference:
  • Abdullah & Abdur-Rahman: The Prophet (PBUH) declared these two names as the most beloved to Allah (Sahih Muslim).
  • Servitude to Divine Names (Asma-ul-Husna): Names prefixed with 'Abdul' combined with Allah's attributes (e.g. Abdul Aziz, Abdul Kareem).
  • Names of Prophets & Messengers: Such as Muhammad, Ahmad, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, Yusuf, and Ismail.
  • Names of Sahaba & Sahabiyat: Companions of the Prophet (PBUH) like Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, Hamza, Aisha, Fatima, Khadija, and Maryam.
Islam strictly forbids naming children with titles reserved exclusively for Allah or names that imply servitude to created beings:
  • Forbidden (Haram): Names indicating worship of others (e.g., Abdul-Nabi, Abdul-Ka'bah) or titles of divine majesty like Al-Khaliq (The Creator) or Malik al-Amlook (King of Kings).
  • Disliked (Makruh): Names with ugly or depressing meanings, arrogant names self-praising virtue (Barrah - 'Pious', which Prophet PBUH changed to Zainab), or names of evil historical figures (Pharaoh, Abu Lahab).
Prophetic Sunnah practices when welcoming a newborn child include:
  • Tahneek: Rubbing a small piece of softened date on the newborn's upper palate upon birth.
  • Naming & Aqiqah (7th Day): Naming the baby, shaving the newborn's head, giving silver/gold charity equivalent to the weight of the hair, and performing the Aqiqah sacrifice (two sheep for a boy, one sheep for a girl).
