📚 History & Mechanics of Islamic Timekeeping

Ghurubi time (التوقيت الغروبي) is the traditional Islamic timekeeping system historically used throughout Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, and across the Ottoman Empire. Unlike modern Civil Greenwich time which resets at midnight (12:00 AM), the Ghurubi clock anchors its 12:00:00 baseline exactly at Maghrib (Sunset). Thus, every Islamic day begins at sunset.
In Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and lunar calendars, night precedes the day. The new date and lunar month (such as Ramadan or Dhul Hijjah) begin when the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. Therefore, the prayers of Ramadan Tarawih are performed on the night before the first fasting day.
The Islamic night is defined as the precise duration from Sunset (Maghrib) to Dawn (Fajr) next morning. To calculate the Last Third:

Night Duration = Fajr (Next Day) - Sunset
Tahajjud Start = Sunset + (2/3 × Night Duration)

According to authentic Hadith, Allah Almighty descends to the nearest heaven during this final third to answer prayers, forgive sins, and grant supplications.
