The division of the Quran into 30 approximately equal portions (Ajza', singular: Juz; also known as Para in South Asia) was established during the classical Islamic era to assist Muslims in completing the recitation (Khatam) of the entire Holy Book across the 30 days of Ramadan. While Surah boundaries and Ayah markers were revealed divinely (Tawqifi), the Juz partitions represent a systematic pedagogical convenience formulated to facilitate memorization, daily litanies, and Tarawih prayers.
To enable granular pacing, classical Quranic scholars divided each Juz into two Ahzab (singular: Hizb, meaning party or group), yielding 60 Ahzab across the Quran. Each Hizb is further subdivided into four quarters (Rub` al-Hizb), creating 240 quarters in total. In classical printed Mushafs, these subdivisions are adorned with geometric octagram medallions in the margins indicating: Rub` (First Quarter), Nisf (Half-Hizb), Thalatha (Three-Quarters), and the complete Hizb conclusion.
The modern standard Madinah Mushaf, calligraphed by master scribe Uthman Taha and published by the King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex, encompasses exactly 604 pages. Each regular Juz spans almost precisely 20 pages (10 physical leaves), with every page beginning with the start of an Ayah and terminating cleanly at the end of an Ayah (known as Huffaz Mushaf), drastically simplifying spatial memorization and mental page indexing.
There are 14 (according to the Hanafi school) or 15 (according to the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, including the second Sajdah in Surah Al-Hajj) prostration verses marked throughout the Quran. When a reciter or listener reaches a Sajdah Ayah, it is an established Sunnah to perform a single prostration facing the Qiblah with Takbeer, praising Allah with: "Sajada wajhi lilladhi khalaqahu wa sawwarahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu bihawlihi wa quwwatih".
