Understanding the 4 Sacred Pillars of Umrah
An authentic Umrah consists of four mandatory pillars (Arkan) that must be performed in sequential order. Fulfilling each step with sincere intention (Niyyah) ensures your pilgrimage is complete and accepted by Allah (SWT).
Pillar 1: Ihram & Entering Niyyah at the Miqat
Ihram represents a sacred state of spiritual purity and total equality before Allah. Before crossing the geographical boundary line called the Miqat, every pilgrim must complete ritual preparations and declare their intention.
- Ghusl & Hygiene: Perform a full ritual bath, trim nails, and groom before putting on Ihram garments.
- Attar (Perfume): Applying scent to your body or beard is recommended before declaring Niyyah. Scenting Ihram clothes directly is prohibited.
- Ihram Attire:
- Men: Two clean, unstitched white sheets (Rida’ for upper body, Izar for lower body) and unstitched footwear exposing the top of feet and ankles.
- Women: Modest Islamic dress (Abaya) covering the entire body except the face and hands.
Upon reaching or flying over your designated Miqat (such as Dhu’l-Hulayfah for Madinah travelers or Yalamlam for flights from Asia), declare Niyyah and begin reciting the sacred Talbiyah continuously:
لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ
“Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.”

Pillar 2: Tawaf al-Umrah (7 Circuits Around the Kaaba)
Upon entering Masjid al-Haram with your right foot, head towards the Mataf area surrounding the Holy Kaaba to perform Tawaf seven counter-clockwise circuits starting and ending at the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone).
Key Sunnah Etiquettes of Tawaf:
- Idtiba’ (Men Only): Uncover your right shoulder by placing the top Ihram sheet under your right armpit and draped over your left shoulder.
- Istilam: At the green indicator light pointing to Hajar al-Aswad, raise your right hand toward the stone and say “Bismillahi Allahu Akbar” to begin each circuit.
- Ramal (Men Only): Walk briskly with short steps during the first three circuits, then walk normally for the remaining four.
- Rukn Yamani Supplication: Between the Yamani Corner and the Black Stone, recite the famous Quranic supplication: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.”

Post-Tawaf Rites: After completing 7 circuits, cover your right shoulder, offer 2 Rak’ahs Sunnah behind Maqam Ibrahim, and drink your fill of blessed Zamzam water.
Pillar 3: Sa’i Between Mount Safa & Mount Marwah (7 Laps)
Sa’i commemorates the devotion and faith of Hajar (RA), wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah searching for water for her infant son Ismail (AS).
- Starting Point: Ascend Mount Safa, face the Kaaba, raise your hands in Dua, and recite: “Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha’a’irillah. Abda’u bima bada’allahu bih.”
- Walking Laps: Walk from Safa to Marwah (Lap 1), then Marwah back to Safa (Lap 2). The 7th lap completes at Mount Marwah.
- Milayn al-Akhdarayn (Green Lights): Men are recommended to jog or walk briskly between the two green light markers suspended in the corridor. Women walk normally throughout.

Pillar 4: Halq or Taqsir (Exiting Ihram – Tahallul)
The final pillar of Umrah is hair shaving or trimming, which signifies humility and spiritual renewal:
- Men: Can choose between Halq (completely shaving the head which carries 3x greater reward) or Taqsir (trimming hair evenly from all around the head by at least fingertip length).
- Women: Perform Taqsir only by gathering their hair and trimming approximately one inch (fingertip length) from the ends in private.
Once hair trimming is finished, you enter the state of Tahallul your Umrah is complete, and all Ihram prohibitions are lifted!

- Salawat at Al-Muwajahah: Convey respectful greetings and Salam to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA), and ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) at the Sacred Chamber.
- Rawdah ash-Sharifah (Riyadh ul-Jannah): Pray 2 Rak’ahs inside the Rawdah (the garden between the Prophet’s house and Minbar). Note: Access requires advance booking through the Saudi official Nusuk App.
