• Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali): For residents and visitors traveling from Al-Madinah (approx. 450 km north of Makkah).
• Al-Juhfah (near Rabigh): For pilgrims traveling from Egypt, Levant, Europe, and North America arriving by sea or air.
• Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir): For travelers from Riyadh, Najd, the Gulf States, and Taif.
• Yalamlam (As-Sa'diyah): For pilgrims traveling from Yemen and southern Asia.
• Dhat 'Irq: Designated by Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu 'anhu) for pilgrims arriving from Iraq and the East.
• Pilgrims must put on their white Ihram towels / abayas before the flight or change inside the plane lavatory well before reaching the boundary.
• Commercial airlines (Saudia, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Flynas, etc.) make a formal PA announcement approximately 30 minutes before flying over the Miqat line.
• At that moment, make your intention (Niyyah) in your seat: "Labbayk Allahumma 'Umrah" and begin reciting the Talbiyah. Passing the Miqat line without Ihram incurs a compensatory penalty sacrifice (Damm).
1. Cutting, trimming, or plucking hair from any part of the body.
2. Clipping finger or toe nails.
3. Applying perfume, scents, or fragrant soaps to clothes or body.
4. For Men: Wearing form-fitting stitched/sewn garments conforming to bodily limbs (e.g. underwear, shirts, trousers, socks).
5. For Men: Covering the head with directly touching headgear (caps, turbans, towels). Umbrellas not touching the head are permissible.
6. For Women: Wearing face veils (Niqab) or gloves (modest loose head covering is mandatory).
7. Marital relations, intimacy, or proposing marriage.
8. Hunting or harming land animals within the Haram sanctuary.
9. Uprooting or cutting green trees and wild plants in the Haram boundary.
Taqsir literally means "to shorten". In pilgrimage jurisprudence, it refers to cutting a portion of the hair from the head to officially exit the state of Ihram (Tahallul al-Asghar).
1. For Men: Halq vs. Taqsir
• Halq (Shaving the entire head): The most virtuous and superior option. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated: "O Allah! Have mercy upon those who shave their heads" three times before mentioning those who trim (Sahih al-Bukhari 1727).
• Taqsir (Trimming) & The "One-Fourth + Single Fingertip" Rule: In classical Fiqh (notably the Hanafi school), the legal minimum required to exit Ihram is trimming at least one-fourth of the head (ربع الرأس) by the measure of a single fingertip's length (Qadr Anmulah / approx. 1 inch / 2–2.5 cm). Trimming from all over the head is the Sunnah practice and unanimously accepted across all four schools. Snipping only 2–3 hairs from the front fringe is legally invalid.
2. For Women: Taqsir is the Sole Prescribed Method
• Shaving the head (Halq) is strictly prohibited (Haram) for women.
• The Sunnah method: The sister gathers all her hair into a single ponytail, holds the ends, and cuts off the length of a single fingertip (approx. 1 inch / 2–2.5 cm) from the tips. This ensures at least one-fourth—and in fact the whole bundle—is trimmed, satisfying all Madhabs.
• This should always be performed in privacy (in the hotel room), never in open view of non-mahrams around the Ka'bah or Marwah.
3. Essential Barbershop & Etiquette Rules
• A pilgrim still in Ihram cannot cut hair for another pilgrim! You must cut your own hair first, exit Ihram, and then you may trim for your companion.
• Barbershops around the Haram in Makkah are licensed and supply new, sterile disposable razor blades for each client. Always ensure the barber opens a fresh razor in front of you.
• Sending continuous Salawat upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
• Offering Salam at the Prophet's Holy Rawdah (Garden of Paradise) between his chamber and minbar with deep reverence and lowered voices.
• Praying 2 Rak'ahs in Masjid Quba, which equals the reward of an Umrah.
• Visiting the martyrs of Mount Uhud and Jannat al-Baqi cemetery.
